Sadly the photo does look like a crack, but looks minor so wouldn't expect it to effect handling (yet!) but could be the cause of a new creak.

Thanks all. Whether it's that crack, or the hairline one running up the headtube I discovered earlier when scrutinising the headset cups, or both that's the cause of the lolloping, I think it's clear the M2 is telling me it's had enough after the thick end of three decades.... Gutted, as it's the bike that got me back on the dirt when I got it six years ago, and as a Stumpjumper was the one I never could hope to have back in the nineties.
