Unknown age Kona

Not sure if it is a good buy or not, but IMHO it is an ugly duckling  which would need a lot of work to transform it into the beautiful swan it once was.

It sold for £260, which isn't that bad as it looked so dubious.

But on the other hand, he's only just spent over £300 on it, so it just shows it isn't wise to spend money on a bike if you're going to sell it. I expect it would have fetched almost £200 even if he'd spent nothing on it (he sent me pictures of the original paint and it wasn't all that bad). So he's over £200 out of pocket comparatively.

Didn't Caldera's have the same drop outs......................paint looks like epoxy powder coat.nice and tough.

Yes, but this Kilauea is a 97 bike and the kind of Calderas you're thinking of were 98 and 99. My point was that none of the 97 range had those dropouts other than the Kilauea and Explosif, and as this isn't an Explosif it must be a 97 Kilauea. In any case, the seller sent me some photos of the bike before it was sprayed (see one below), so there's no doubt about it. It's actually a very high quality frame, the lightest of any Kilauea and they sold them for £399 frame only in 1997.

From that picture it looks like he might have been better trying to polish up the original paint. Didn't look too bad!
