I've just got this Univega Alpina 506 racelight chromo frame and I'm having trouble dating it, any ideas?

Thanks

I have a 1992 Univega Alpina Pro with the same "Max Mudroom" chain stays and fluro pink and black colour scheme.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking of building it up to a single speed, I'll post the results when finished.

Sorry for bringing up that old post. But the "Max Mudroom" stuff was still present in the later stell models (i owned a Alpina 600 form 1996).

If you can identify the color maybe you should chekcout www.bikepedia.com, they have a nice listing of Univega bikes.

I just went there myself and it seems like it's a 1996 modell. The naming sheme changed from a dot style in 94 to a x0x style in 95. And in 95 there are only odd numbers, even in 96.

Greetings,
michael

Thanks for the info Nomad.

Don't worry about dragging up the old post. I've been meaning to post an update anyway.

I've built it up as a hack/commute single speed (using old mech as tensioner) and it rides fantastic. Initially I had some crappy suntour xct forks (which weren't actually that bed - just heavy) I've now swapped these for some rigid chromo forks.

All in all I'm very happy with it, the geometry is just about perfect for my lanky body.

I liked the long "racy" geometry on my alipna 600 very much. But sadly the frame broke at the connection from dropout to chainstay. Had it replaced under warranty with a 2000 Alumimum Alpina 570 (wich was the best model you could get with 1 1/8 steertub, the 590 had the Concept Headshock rip-off fork) model but that was stolen 2004. Oh I miss that old bike. When the frame broke i so badly wanted a new steel one, but they didn't have any in stock back then.

But on the other hand, I now own a heck lot of them bikes ;) , even got a pretty scuffed Alpina 570 again for my girlfriend (the size of the frame is the same as the one I rode but it was suprisingly small when i tried it again so it changed ownership - sort of.

And to stopp wading in my past, back to topic. Nice ride. And you definetly should use the rigid fork. It's just so nice direct and predictable. And anything with more than 50mm travel is killing you steering angle.

Sorry to drag up such an old thread - I just found this after searching the forum for 'Univega'.

The OP's bike looks as if it has a 1 1/8 steerer and no cable stop on the seat stays for cantilevers. Up to 1996, Univega used 1" forks and cantis.

I think it's a '97 model.

i would say it is a 1997 model, i have a 1996 and a 1997, 1996 still has a canti hanger on the rear brake bridge but the 1997 hadnt, nor does yours. like most manufacturers, they were about a year behind the brake trends.
