Ultegra 6400 7s rear mech with 8s shifters and cassette ?

I think it should work, but can anyone confirm it for me before I go ahead and try it? the 6400 rear mech is from the 7s group, but I think it should work fine with 8s shifters and mech from the 6401 8s group...

Won't-ish work. You will get all the cogs okay but it'll moan like a b@st@rd 1st.

I think it should work. Shimano left plenty of extra movement of thick dropouts etc. However, you might be unlucky if your frame is extreme. It's a 'try and see' one.

I've had very similar working, however on one that I've got working at the moment the cage runs very close the to teeth plus chain when in 2nd gear on a 12-28 cassette.
