Tyre challenge

My new-to-me Muddy Fox’s rear triangle has clearance for 1.95 max, less if the side knobs are very sidey.
Front will take about a 2.1, maybe a 2.2.

What does the retro hivebrain think would be the best all-round combo, for just riding around on easy trails with Mrs Fourstrings? I’m not super-bothered about period correctness.

I’d like to say budget no object, but the bike only cost £60, so...

Pretty much anything from the Continental, Michelin or Schwalbe stables would suit. They are few really dud tyres nowadays (unlike retro tyres like Tioga Pschos which were truly awful). Just make sure you get a 2.0 rather than a 2.2!

Re:

Thanks!

A 2.0 won't fit the rears, unfortunately: there's about 5mm clearance to the drive-side chain stay. (I do need to re-dish the wheel... but I think it'll still be tight.)

Like already said, lots of good tyres about nowadays, hard to go wrong especially for easy trails like you say.

Also different tyres have different profiles, so one tyre in 2.0 wont be the same actual width as another.

Re:

Schwalbe do 1.9" tyre, Black Jack for example.

Unlike above I have no problem with Schwalbe tyre, if they do a Tough Tom in 1.9, get one.

I also quite liked the Psycho, better than a Smoke/Dart combo in my opinion.

You should find a few Conti's too, some people like them (I loved the explorer).

I've liked conti's trail king and mountain king. Careful not to pump too hard as the side walls are a little thin. Might be too wide though.

You can find plenty of cheap, hard wearing and narrow panaracer smoke-a-likes too.

Re:

Michelin Cross Cross County
Continental Traffic II
Schwalbe Black Jack
Are all 1.9/1.95
I just checked to add to my other post.

More choice for the front of course.
