Turbo trainers...

Can't help you, my trainer uses nitrous oxide.

Joking aside : You usually get what you pay for.
A few years ago, I bought one on the cheap. It locked up while I was doing close to 25MPH. That's a recipe for serious injuries.

It really does depend on what you are using it for to be honest...

Some pointers though...

Noise- go for a fluid one rather than fan and a slick (not necessarily turbo specific) tyre

Heat- you'll get warm v-quickly so have a fan to hand if you can, and a towel for that matter...sweat-tastic

Boredom- you'll get bored quickly (if like me) so dig out a video to watch, maybe something from the 'sufferfest' range as they kind of give you something to push for when on it

They can be good for those crappy days when going out is not an option but you will need will power to go out on it as its not as exciting as the real thing.

Worth trying though and loads out there either new or second hand...even ones where you can plug into PC and do real XC or road stages but they are top dollar.

Cheers

Locked up what happened?

The rolls themselves locked up, and the inertia of the wheel + my pedaling power basically slammed the trainer backwards. Then the tyre hit the ground and bike+trainer went from 0 to 5 MPH in a millisecond.

And while 5MPH may not sound like much, it's pretty scary if you don't expect it and suddenly find yourself 2 ft from a wall at that speed.
It's the first and (hopefully) last time I did a wheelie and a stoppie in my bedroom.

i got a tacx satori (http://www.decathlon.co.uk/satori-pro-h ... 64386.html) a couple of weeks ago and am trying to use it a couple of times a week. I like it, it serves a purpose & the only 2 downsides are the noise & finding a cure for the boredom.

my problem is that working split shifts I don't really get opportunity to get out for a meaningful ride unless i'm on a day off & when i do get one and the weather is good, i usually end up with mowing / hedge cutting / shopping.... getting in the way.

what I am doing as a means to get me fit again is running on medium resistance and middle ring, mid cassette at about 13mph. the resistance is similar to a slightly more than shallow-ish up hill & I am currently doing about 45 minutes at a time (but will increase time & resistance as my knee strengthens & i get fitter).

noise isn't too bad, just a constant whirring & so long as you don't get above about 18mph you won't annoy the neighbours.

for entertainment, i'm setting up in the kitchen facing the worktop with the laptop in front of me & i'll watch an episode of a tv show, most 1 hour shows come down to about 45 minutes with the ad breaks taken out so the timing is ideal really. once i start getting between 45mins & 1.5 hours i'll make a start on some audio books!

any advice

Take the money it would cost, put it in an envelope and stash it in the loft for a few years. It's essentially the same effect as buying a turbo trainer but the financial return is better :)

I've just got a basic Tacx - you can change the resistance and that's about it.

I use a Turbo specific tyre - they are supposed to handle the heat they generate better.

Towel/fan and drink a must have
Laptop & DVDs of the Tour de France works for me
iPod with some uptempo tunes

Best thing was a heart rate monitor. I always struggled with how hard to go at it. With the HRM and a training program from the Polar website - I could work at 70% or 80% etc. Great training aid imho

I have a Tacx Sirius turbo. Boring does not come into it, hate it. 30 minutes on it seems like a total lifetime. Going to download some of the sufferfest stuff and see if that improves things. I spend countless days away from home outside the UK so I intend to motivate myself to utilise the free gym access I get when I am away as I need to improve my base fitness a lot.
