I want to strip and polish my holzfeller cranks, nitromors won't do it so I'm guessing its an anodised black finish. Is this a job for caustic soda?

Perserverance is someting I do have. Money is not :) I've already started with 120grit...might post up some pics of the job :)

15-20 minutes in oven cleaner will strip the ano, leaving a sort of black powdery finish. this rubs of easily with a scourer or brillo pad

these middleburns spent 20 mins in oven cleaner then about 15 minutes gently with a brillo pad.

i would usually go through the wet and dry grades depending on scratches finishing with 1500 -2000 grit then finish with autosol.

these cranks are being polished by machine though, by Jerry Thurston who has offered his services in this departement for trades i belive.

dont leave in oven cleaner too long as the aluminium will pit

i have also used fine grade wire wool that can be got from b and q and the like with good results for the nooks where its too hard to get wet and dry into

when you say oven cleaner, you mean 'oven pride' yes? the one with the bag :) :p
ta for the advice people

yep the oven pride stuff is what i use, you need to sort of work the oven cleaner into the nook and crannies , so wear gloves or at least dont do as i did and use a bag with holes

i use what is in the cupboard, oven pride for the middleburns but i think i have used mr muscle or some such in the past.

rinse well after and its better to leave in too short than too long

these were done by hand in the method described and actually began with some quite nasty scratches
