Retro Newbie
Hi,
I'm new here in that I just started posting (on the dark side so far) although I've been a lurker for a while. I wonder if anyone can make any suggestions regarding a current resto project.
My dilemma is this: I am rebuilding my old Triumph Tempest that I've had from new (1984). I realise it's not the most sought after bike but I'm very attached to it and still ride it at least weekly, it's the only road bike I have ever owned but I am currently looking into getting hold of something more sprightly and of a similar vintage. I have rebuilt it before and the last time it got a crappy rattlecan paint job, new wheels, a new rear cassette, new BB and a set of cranks salvaged off an old Raleigh that I hauled out of a skip. This time I intend to do it properly and it's going for blasting and powdercoat in something close to it's original colour. I want to replace the transmission as the downtube shifters have been replaced with low end shimano stuff that I struggle to adjust such that they shift smoothly and stay in gear. The front and rear derailleurs are Sachs Huret items that came with the bike and they still work great but are cosmetically hellish. I wonder if I should try to find direct replacements for the Sachs stuff or is it worth switching to some stuff from Shimano/Campagnolo? I dont want to spend a fortune on an overpriced NOS groupset so I wonder if anyone can offer any advice before I hit ebay and buy a load of incompatible parts?
