Trek 970 - Aberdeen

Brilliant. Very appropriate that it’s a ‘91 model too. I’ll need to get my uncle-in-law to give me a refresher on the bike shop landscape in Aberdeen in the 90s. He’s long retired from the game but has some great stories from back then. He’s not a sentimental guy but was particularly proud of his relationship with Trek. Which must’ve started quite early in the AB timeline cos he was already a Top 10 Trek dealer in 1991.

That fantastic to see / read. Then both must have been dealers same time. It was crazy the amount of bikes being sold at that time. Cycling World focused on Specialized bikes and was top dealer in UK at similar time.

I remember building circa 25-30 bikes / sold on a Saturday then same again on a Sunday. I got paid £2 a bike to build

Who was your Uncle out of interest? I was friends with some of the guys who ran the Alpine Bikes store in Aberdeen back in 91/92. Just lived around the corner from them as well at the time.

My goodness, the bike is even better in the new pictures! Could almost be mistaken for NOS if it wasn't for the add ons.

Such a good score and I love how this has opened up such a cool back story. I can almost smell that classic bike shop aroma of tyres and oil through that picture

Possibly the easiest resto on RB as well. Have fun with it!

Great purchase and a great back story.
Given the condition I'm surprised that the original stem and saddle items weren't included as it kind a feels like they'd have been kept in as good condition off the bike - I assume you asked?

My uncle-in-law is David McKay, the founder of Alpine Bikes in 1989. He still lives in the city although long retired from the bike industry. His first shop was a tiny unit on Willowbank Road.




He soon moved to a larger shop and then eventually to Holburn Street where the shop was until a couple of months ago. Maybe you recognise some of the people in this picture @trailwright?
