Hi Guys..

Is it posible to run a single ring crank up front with 8 gears on the back without needing some sort of retainer on the front chainring ? would the rear mech keep the tension ok ?

TIA

Yes I believe you can. Ask Ededwards - pretty sure he runs that on his Vit T. Here's a picture from when it was at the Real Ale Wobble. Not very clear but it definitely is 1 x 8.

1 x 8

i run a 32 up front and 8 at the rear and haven't had any problem to date, i don't have a chain retention device or bash guard on the front either just a stripped down lx crankset. my chain line is set for the center of the rear group, sweet as anything on changing gear.

Thanks for that fella.. the project begins ;)

If anyone else has anything to add to this , your comments would be appreciated.. :)

Run a Middleburn Uno up front and save loads of weight over a Shimano crank ;)

1x8

As long as you are going to run a single chainring up front, why not use a 9 speed rear cluster?

I did think about that, but the thumbshifter will be too much of a stretch, and 8 gears are enough.. ;)

I've run 1x8 with 9-speed spacing, and 1x9. Probably obvious, but my tips would be:

Use a singlespeed chainring or an old one with tall teeth and no shift ramps.

Short cage derailleur.
