1. Politics is always at work - it never sleeps.
2. Sometimes - just sometimes - "justice" is assisted by a bit of politics - after all, it's normally done to curry public favour, rather than some ivory-towered-thought.

But after all this has died down, I believe many will be watching just to see what the run of the mill criminals get in court, you know, the drug dealers, thugs,burglars, murderers and rapists.

Don't transcend cynical to stupid. The only time major things like that happens, is precisely when somebody is politicking.
