Topline crank repairs after

doogie,

what did you do to resolve the crack on the interior of the arm where it leads to the JIS taper?

Totally weld the entire end closed and re-machine?

If not, that crack will be visiting you again soon...please be careful.

cheers,

rody

Even then, he'd have to burn thru 10mm of material to solidify the entire crack, inside and out. That alone could do weird and wacky things to the material. I like the finished product, but I wouldn't ride it.

Like splitting an engine block on the drag strip, you can sometimes fix them, but they aren't ever the same. I'd call these cranks Garage Queens for sure. Nice save though, better patched and polished than tossed in the dumpster.

Toplines had a rep for breaking, and not being the stiffest cranks out there (though mine have been fine).

I really would think long and hard about using them on a bike though - breaking /snapped cranks usually lead to some pretty nasty accidents.

It fits great and looks great, I was quite surprised how well the repair went and I think it looks and performs great. :D
Time will tell.
There was no way I was going to bin it and it aint no garage queen! ;)
Thanks for your interest mate. :)

Don't coast goofy, and keep your fingers crossed. I've never had a crank snap and it's not something i'd care to experience. I think you're either fearless or foolhardy.

:D Well time is on your side, the longer it lasts, the stronger it gets. Until of course it fatigues out again, which is what happened in the first place.

Kudos to your welding mate! :!: Would certainly relish veiwing your mates welding proceedure, if you have time to post it.
