to steal or not to steal?

Ive left my note so now well see if anyone responds but the outcry to leave it has swayed me. I never really wanted the a cinder cone to begin with and although the "theft" itself would be executed by the police I'm not going through with it. When asked this afternoon the fellas at my shop answered the same question with a resounding NO and then went on to berate my taste in cycles (nothing out of the ordinary). So now I can think of about 8 good reasons not to take this bike under my wing and show it some love and only 2 semi ok reasons to go ahead and grab it up. I will however take some more pics of it in the seasons to come and post 'em up here. Anyway thanks again for all the input.

yeah man, it's probably for the best.

but that's not a bad idea, you can make a thread for it over in the reader's ride section, sort of pseudo adopting it; it can be the foster cinder cone thread: through the seasons

i have figured it out. why its there, why it is still there and why it hasn't been stripped or vandalised.....

it is a set up by a twisted vigelante. he is on a mission to rid the streets of n.y.of bike theifs. he is monitoring the bike. anyone who attempts to damage or steal it he swoops on and tortures, saw stylee.

hmmm, that's not a bad idea either

I have seen many bikes just on my block that have been there for literally years locked in the same positions. One ugly looking old mountain bike that I thought was completely abandoned got it's seat stolen at some point. The next time I saw it, still in the same locked position apparently unridden, a new seatpost and seat were on it! So who knows who owns what, and what is really abandoned.

However, in NYC you can steal a bike with giant cutters and no one will give a rats ass. Here is a video to prove that point http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbklkFuFk-4. If you don't want to bother watching it, a guy steals his own bike several times in public places in NYC with police practically watching, and a guy even helping him cut his chain! He didn't have to prove it was his. It's too easy to steal a bike.

Personally, I believe in the karma bike gods and don't even bother touching the stem valve covers on the bikes that have been sitting for years. Don't care what they are, their not mine.

this guy did the right thing. first and foremost. being in law enforcement, don't ask the internet or friends about stuff like this. go to the law and ask directly. ask to see a section of law, regualtion or something to cover your ass. if you have to do A, B, C, and D to get this bike then do it. Then after doing all the LAW told you to do and you still want the bike, then go get it...no matter all the moral BS everyone is giving you. You would have proved yourself a moral person already by checking with local law enforcement AND doing all that you could within the law to see if this bike belonged to someone else. :D
