to steal or not to steal?

I dont gonestly think that been ridden for a while. Looks saveable though. On the question of should you take it or not, I would do as suggested above and leave a note. If it hasn't moved within a week or so then I would take it.

PS. Is the fork brace missing?

Quite simple, drop the chain off the chainring. If the chain is back on the next day or week then you know it's being ridden.

Personally I don't like the idea of stealing, no matter what. It is someone elses until they tell you otherwise, I mean I don't ride half my bikes ever but I don't want someone to use that as an excuse to break into my house and 'liberate' them!

from my perspective, the bike has been neglected and then abandoned ,and its unlikely that the owner will return and then if they do invest the time and effort in restoring and maintaining her.
Im not advocating for you to steal bikes, but to save or rescue a bike is another matter, and in my mind over rides any moral objection to theft which is based on our own fear and feelings when or if a bike we own is stolen.
You could make a deal with your self that if you are ever stopped in the street and someone says thats my bike, you give it back without objection, saying that you was only looking after it for them,

if your 100% sure that the bike has been left as long as you say, then go for it, I amazed though, even in the most respectable parts of Birmingham, you could not leave a bike chained up day in and day out with out at least bits going missing

The perception wee Brits have of the US prison system would absolutely dissuade me from stealing anything in your neck of the woods. Leave it be and leave a note to show your interested.

sounds the best approach,

It's tricky. I had the same. Saw a MF locked up with a D lock. Within 3 months just a frame left. Council took the frame away :(

Be careful :!:

Theft is Theft,

Regardless of the details it does not belong to him, so taking it without contacting the owner is theft, technically not contacting the owner is no excuse to steal a bike he may or may not want.

It shows how bad britain is when theft is advocated if an excuse is deemed appropriate, and that excuse is simply "I want".
In my opinion if you want one earn the bread and pay for one, by STEALING that you are no better than a criminal. I know of many nice bikes sitting unused in places, I WOULD NOT entertain any notion or idea of them being "available" due to their owners neglect.

I sometimes leave my Trek in odd places, it's not worth anything, but just because I don't value it, leaving it locked somewhere is something I should be able to do without worrying about someone wanting to steal it as it's going to waste.

it cant be ridden away , look at the forks , they are rubbing agaisnt the tyres .

Actually they have had the fork arch removed - which implies to me that its not being ridden.

What you should have done is use you cable cutters and just nicked it :LOL:Instead of announcing it to a forum.
If you suddenly appear with one in members bike,we'll all know where it came from.

Joking ,i dont condone theft,we've all been there :(
