I've always fancied Magura brakes.
I love the idea of hydraulic rim brakes. Such a good idea! Never owned a set, though.
How easy are they to work on? Should I stop being silly and just stick with what I know?

great brakes. They can be a bit fiddle to set up. Or is that my mind set before i set to work on them??
Any why once fitted. Don't have to touch ecept to fit new blocks every 6 months if used to go to work. Less if off road in the summer (remember summer??!!)

Never owned a set but am also toying with the idea as they're not that expensive and being closed means you save money on new cables all the time.

Only thing that puts me off is the guides....how do you attach the hose to a frame designed for disc brakes? Not going to look tidy zip tied onto a sweet retro frame.

Heavy, ugly, clunky feeling and I've never liked the lever shape.

Same down sides as canti's and V's in that they destroy rims and can't handle buckled wheels.

I still like them though

If the frame is designed for disc brakes then you don't really have a problem - depending on the type of guides, the hose either runs through them or is zip tied to them. If it's the through type, then you have to thread the hose through before attatching to the lever and bleeding the brakes obviously.

If the frame has brake cable stops fitted then you can use these. Probably the tidiest solution.

As tintin said great once you set them up, but that can be a bit of a pain. Though its like canti's/gears etc, once you get a system its not that hard. If you have a mechanical penchant there great for fiddling with and upgrading and stuff. They give great mud clearance too if thats an issue.

Oh and you should get a set for 40 - 50 quid and if you don't like them you'll sell them for the same.

They are heavy. First time out on mine, I thought I was pedalling the QE2. More effective than V's, but then, I never found V's ineffective. It's all relative to plastic canti's I suppose.

People say heavy, but I weighed my old set of HS-33's and the total setup (everything - pads, cables, bolts, the works) came in at 970g, you could ditch the braces to save some weight.

I wonder how much a full mid-range Shimano V-brake set up would weigh? Obviously less but surely only a few hundred g's less. Easily the sort of weight that can be made up in a few other components if you're really bothered.

Operation wise I found them excellant and really easy to set up - trimming the cable just requires a sharp blade.
