To Grease or Not to Grease

I've recently found a source for lots of new old stock parts, and I'm curious about what should be done. For example, I have a set of never installed Deore XT thumbs, which I intend to use on my build. Should I break them down and add oil, assuming that the old lubrication has dried up, or is it ok to simply slap them on and go? My bikes have been subjected to decades of neglect and abuse, perhaps now is the time to set things right

If they are that old I would give them a squirt of WD40 in through the cable hole just to soften the grease a little.

I would not do anything but I am also very lazy. Probably be fine. Bit of wd40 can't hurt, smells nice as well.

Regarding shifters if they've come out of a nice packet and box and haven't been stored in a hot or damp place I'd fit em as is!

I'd vote against WD40. I haven't come across any thumbies, despite some having a hard life, which really needed much servicing. However, if they were stiff, I'd do it properly - WD40 is a short term solution, but can flush out original lubrication.

greasing old parts is a lot like bum sex. If it's been left for a long time you should grease it up, if it's been used hard, fast and recently you'll be fine.

in this case, though, if they are truelly NOS and have been suitable kept, a quick squirt of lubrication (something like molyslip or similar) in the correct hole maybe all that's needed.

WD40 is perhaps the most polarising substance on the planet, with the exception of cocaine.

Its true through, it does strip grease away but a little squirt would probably get the grease moving again if indeed it had seized up.
