Tinkerers' Corner - Homemade Bashring

Years ago I cleared CRC out of Blackspire 42T 94BCD DH chain rings - they were on sale for about £4.

In the dozen or so, one had a minor manufacturing fault - essentially the operator doing the screen
printing or laser etching or whatever must have had a blinding hangover because he put it in the
machine the wrong way. ie. all the logos printed on the inside of the ring.

Today was finally the day to convert it to a bashring, well more of chain guard if I'm honest.

I'll let the pictures do most of the talking since it's dead simple.

All teeth gone with the help of an hacksaw. Still a fair bit of material to take off though.

Used a very course extremely large file which made light work of it.

Re:

First rough pass with the file just going below the tooth gaps.

Re:

always thought of doing this with worn rings on m579 type chainsets where outer ring and spider are integrated, but lots of work without a grinding wheel or did you use a file, surely not ? more info required :D edit ok missed second post, super file ?

Getting close. I used the ridge as a stop point.

Smoothed and lightly beveled the edges with some 120 grit sand paper ensuring it was perfectly round.

All done, perfect for the 36T I will be using.

About an hours tinkering. Difficulty level about zero

Yep, super monster file. I reckon it would go through a Shimano ring as if it was melted butter ;)
