I'm left wondering where you are going for these quotes. £600+ for a pair of forks ? Really? And £2750 for a 853 frame?Forks arrived today: absolute mint nos as described. Bargain. I was quoted £636 for a pair of unfinished new forks in 753. This steel frame building malarkey is getting out of the reach of ordinary working folk.... £2750 quoted for a hand built 853.

I've just had a quick look on the Rourke site and 853 frames start at £1100. Gawd knows what the extra £1600 buys
A Mercian Professional... £2461 off the peg, nearly £3k bespoke. You can't get 753 for love nor money. All snapped up already.
Ok, I take the point re 753.
But 853 is not so rare. No wonder Mercian went out of business with those prices. Seems they are seeking custom from the capitals investment bankers

Yep. Mercian quoting just a shade under 3k for their top end 853 offering. £5-600 seems to be the going rate for Reynolds 753 forks, on account of the very limited availability of 753 nowadays and the specialist silver solder low temp skills to build a pair..
Steel is definitely going to price itself out of business altogether, which is a shame. Exploiting nostalgia will only get you so far!
