This weekends find: 1991 Scott Unishock for $20

Okay I know what some of you may be thinking, at $20 I paid $15 too much, especially given the condition of this fork. But, the internals are in really good working order (apart from the top & bottom out elastomers which can easily be dealt with). The bushings in this fork, for those not familiar, are long plastic sleeves that also act as the damping for the coil springs. Unfortunately once the sleeves wear, the friction decreases and so too does the available damping. This turns the fork into a pogo-stick. Scott tried to counter this with elastomer "upgrade kits" (wow, times must have been bad for an elastomer stack to be considered an upgrade), and subsequent versions were mainly elastomer based (although I believe this model was still retained as the basic offering in the range). Ironically the use of coil springs meant this component of the fork is still in great working order.

I had a set of forks like this in late 1991 when I was just 12 years old, and had saved up for half a year doing paper rounds to buy them. After a season of winter riding they were stuffed and had no damping characteristics left and seized up if I rode within 30 yards of a puddle of water. So, along with my bike at the time they got sold.

Okay, so now to today's story. I'm going to sand these down and get them re-painted and get new sticker made up. The chrome stanchions are badly rusted but I've cleaned them up and from a few metres away the pitting would hardly be visable. The good part is that the area that contacts the bushings is in quite good condition. As long as these are used in dry, non-dusty conditions they will be fine.

Re:

They are still in line waiting to be tended to. Sorry I don't want to sell them. Actually since buying these I bought another pair off ebay about 6 months ago that are in awesome condition and I got them for $20 USD inc shipping! So they do come up occasionally. I hope you find some for your project!
