Things weighing less or more than expected?

Back story; as a teen I loved searching and buying bits to make my bikes lighter and I still love a light bike. I’m a bit of a closet weight weenie and have enjoyed weighing stuff I’ve bought over the last 4 years.

Latest bike is a completely original titanium diamondback with a Ritchey Vector titanium saddle that I’d like to preserve and not use due to its condition. Im unable to find a worse condition replacement titanium so decided to purchase a cro mo version (thank you @raidan73 lovely saddle) even though it’s a heavy item.

The weight difference surprised me….i feel I’ve been had all these years!

Anyone else had items they are surprised aren’t heavier/lighter than presumed??

229g titanium and 246g Cro-mo.

Yes I got an Orange Alu-O frame some time back, always wanted one as Aluminium was lighter and the new thing to have, back then I went Orange Prestige instead, this made a really nice light bike back then

The Alu-O it turns out is 5.1lb for my 19" frame, that's bottom end steel territory, not high class stuff.
Decent steels where down around 4.6lb for 19/20" frames.

Would definitely not predict that!

Nuts and bolts. Take every fastener off the bike and make a pile. Get the same array in Ti and Al and the weight difference is staggering.

Rockshox sid carbon was heavier than the aluminium version.
Oh and a lot more expensive.

I'm surprised there was that much difference.
Sometimes the lightest saddles had chromo tubular rails, whereas the ti versions were solid rod, therefore heavier.

As an aside though, heavy titanium parts are a lot more durable than equivalent weight alum’ and more dent resistant than thin-gauge steel. But most significantly they can offer a softer, flexy feel (a good or bad thing).
I always use Ti seatposts, saddle rails and bars. They don’t weigh any less but I like the shock damping quality, and fatigue resistance

Cheap carbon is heavier than nice aluminium
Cheap aluminium or ti is heavier than nice steel

But the marketing is often about the material not the quality.

Remember the carbon-weave-effect stickers found on frames and seatposts?
