The Work / Life balance ?

I suppose the problem is once you get saddled with mortgages and family the work life balance shifts in favour of work because it has to for the sake of the family, which I suppose means family and home could be seen as the ball and chain that keeps a person anchored to work, work work and yet more work topay the bills.

But on the other hand not havng a family and a mortgage one is free and can more or less dictate the balance as one only has oneself to please.

But that doesn't work for long, as it seems people are hard wired to seek the ball and chain

So, what is it natural or sociatal programming ?

The Wikipedia has a good explanation on the importance of work-life balance. To me it's simply striking a balance with my work-life, there are times when we have a schedule tight schedule this is when we should prioritize with certain things so that we do not get stressed. However, the major responsibility also depends on the approach of our employers.

Currently having a work / home re-balance myself. I have not felt well for a few months and finaly got myself to the doctors 4 weeks ago. It's not as if I go to the doctors very often, the GP worked out that I had been 4 times in 11 years.

I've had every test under the sun, pints of blood have been taken, ECG's, MRI's, X-rays, and so far the diagnosis is unsure. Not knocking my GP as he has been brilliant and his concern is that a patient who has not been unwell for so long keeps on coming back.

Still awaiting some test results, they have ruled out the common ilnesses -diabetis, glandular fever, anemia, plus loads of other ones. The test for protiens in the blood was a little high but nothing to cause concern.

So, it is probably a virus which has caused ME or CFS. Both of which are likely due to a stressful job and difficulties at home. Time to take things a bit easier and reconsider what is important in my life.

Won't stop me riding my bikes as excercise is great for destressing and helps with relaxation. That is the answer - ride your bike more and everything will be fine.

So for an employer to be observant and supportive of a healthy work/life balance the business should employ many with set hours so everyone can have that balance but what we have is the reverse, businesses shedding staff so as to cut costs the result that work that would have been done by many has to to be done by the remainder. Increased hours, maybe increased pay, but what use is that if one has no life or down time to unwind from those hours of often harder work. Now it is quite usual when these cost cutting measures come into practice that the employed make some useful money in trade for their loss of home life, but if long hours are the only way one is going to get some useful cash, then that is saying the majority of people are underpaid in the first place.

Easy to say, but my adage is "work to live, not live to work". I get 5 weeks paid holiday a year and by god I use it.

But obviously everyones situations are different. I was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2003 which has caused me to be epileptic. It's just sitting there at the moment behaving itself but who knows?

I just try to enjoy life as I can. I don't let my job get me down or it would make me ill; I just live for the evenings with the nipper and the weekends and holidays for more good times no matter what they are. Out to the park, watch the football, blast the singletrack.

Peace

Often it is the poorer or less skilled a person is, the more their work life balance is tipped in the favour of work.

Except for those who see work as their reason to live, which I can understand but those that do that only tend to realise too late that work is not everything in life as they look back at the best years of their lives wasted on an employer.
