The Work / Life balance ?

It's also about money / time balance. We decided that it was better for the kids that one of us doesn't work - instead they get our attention, more activities etc. So we don't have fancy holidays, huge house or a new car.

7 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer. Having a midlife crisis at age 36 was a distinct privilege...

 that puts things into perspective

Yes, I agree any situation that causes the midlife crisis puts things into perspective, that time out where only life matters makes one think where one is going, I did the same and no more, I am dipping out of the accepted view of what one must have to appear successful, new car every three years, foreign holidays and the latest gadget, it is all crap. And that crap, and almost expectation has to be paid for and so many males and in fact parents hardly see their family as they are working long hours to pay for what the marketeers have said we just have to have.

The result is parents do not bring up their young they are too busy, but to substitute for love and attention the child gets the latest shiny gadget which they tire of easily for what they really want is their family and the young grow up like this and we wonder why kids are the way they are, used to getting everything they apparently need but are angry individuals hardly balanced at all.

Parents, well heart problems are rife in this country and stress is proved to be a killer, is this what life is about a slave to commerce and there taxation.

work always come second or third in life. Home life always come first.

Work/life balance is just a myth perpetuated by self righteous companies

The lot I work for are always spouting about it, but then bring in new fixed working hours to replace the previous flexible ones. Also cut down the amount of people off on leave at one time making it even harder to spend time with ones family or undertake other activities with friends

You may have seen on another thread that due to my neurological condition and pent up anger (think its now known as stress) I am now off sick and facing disciplinary action if I ever return due to my rantings about this very subject amongst others.

Finally cracked after working for the same lot for 35 years and apart from the financial implications feel a damn sight better for it. Realised just how crap life had become, final straw was them saying we could no longer have a kettle. Made it sound a safety issue, but they have been PAT tested and purely done to stop people spending time making a drink.

They messed about with my pension and I have gone from expecting to leave at 58 with a full pension to god knows when and even the government pension payout went up to 66. Worked it out that if I stayed until I was 66 it would have meant working there for 50 years, what sort of work/life balance is that?

Rant over and now off to counselling whatever that might entail

From changing job 3 years ago, I think that you often don't realise how cruddy your employer is until you leave and discover a better one!

Ah, the old work/ life balance chesnut.

I'm working around 80-100 hours a week at the moment. I had a wet week in Devon this year and apart from the annual weekend at Le Mans that has been it for holidays since our honeymoon 6 years ago. My car is 40 years old and is broken and I don't have many gadgets. Bikes, yes, but less and less time to use them. I get to see my kids for 30 minutes a day before they go to bed and on sundays if I take a day off. Rest of the time is just work work work.

So do I have a good work/ life balance???

My work/life balance was excelent 6 months ago, then my worthless piece of shit arrogant bullying tosspot of a boss decided i was to happy, Nowadays i spend most of my time wound up and frustrated with the job. I have to argue on a daily basis about not being blackmailed into working 12+ hours every day. I hate my job!
