The Retrobike National MTB Event Series 2013

Round 3: Aviemore ~ Cairngorm Mountains - Scotland - AFTERMATH

This is what you get on a Macretro National....

Unfortunately you also get a broken rib, bruised liver, damaged arm and ego.

Bit of a disaster at the end Saturday's ride, 2 miles from the end Zigzag launched himself off the trail down a ten foot drop and broke a rib, damaged his arm and cut his head. We had to take him to hospital then home leaving a much reduced clan up at Aviemore for the now guideless Sunday ride. I suspect that it might be shorter or a different route than originally planned.

Here are some of the pics I took, it was a great day, with superb weather and some jaw-dropping scenery. All you non-Macretro riders really should get yourselves up to the Highlands, where there are some proper mountains
Thanks to those that arranged the ride, it was good to see the Macretro clan for the first time, and sample some of the Macretro banter
Get well soon Zigzag, and full marks for attempting a gap jump like that :shock: I expect we'll be seeing you at the next Red Bull Rampage?

Fantastic location, weather, trails and banter. Great way to spend a weekend.
It was good to put a few more faces to names too. zigzag hope you're feeling better and are on the mend soon, you get my vote for "crash of the ride". If you do enter redbull rampage, as jim suggested, perhaps take a bike with 12" of travel front and rear

I shall echo the sentiments above.
The highlands at their best and great to see faces old and new.
Some nice bikes too. Retro ride of the meet would be between Jimos Pace and DynaCols Dyna Tech IMHO. Both rather tasty looking.

I never saw the crash so can't give marks for style to ZigZag but can wish the crashee a speedy recovery.

And for those who never made it, check out TKs great photo at the top of the page. In real life it was even better.

Thanks for all the kind words gents - feeling a bit sore today, but more mobile than I expected and having your wife running around after you and sleeping on a big pile of pillows really isn't too that bad. What can I say - if you're going to hurt yourself, make sure you do it with these guys.

Thanks to Nurse Rob's expert and tender wound dressings, epicyclo for whipping out a 10mil spanner and fixing my errant front brake pad, Barry the ambulance man, Jamie for bringing me some dry clothes and driving over half the highlands with me, The Ken for driving back me down the road, Keith, Velo, Rob and Dynacol for packing up all my crap and loading (throwing) it in the car, and everybody for nursing me along the last couple of miles back towards civilisation.

Thanks for taking care of me, and sorry I spoiled what had been a cracking weekend up to that point. The Old Bridge Inn will keep till the next time...

Oh aye, my Red Bull Rampage career is over before it began - forget about 12" of travel, 12 feet and I might just have coped.

what a great day, brilliant camping, brilliant, ride and fantastic company...if carlsberg did road trips!

Get well soon ZZ. Ribs seem to be the injury of the month, a week on and I'm finally able to bend down to put my shoes on without wincing.
Bloody work, I miss all the sunny rides.
