Re:

Every single year I need to replace my Scott's UN-55 because it starts to run rough. This year is no exception.
It's not too bad yet, but it was noticeable when riding and certainly so when spinning the crank while holding the BB in my hand.
No amount of protecting the seals with grease etc seems to help, those BBs just don't last more than 3-4000 miles apparently.

So let's try something different, something I can take apart and re-grease at regular intervals.

Of course I didn't have the tools for cup-and-cone BBs, only for cartridge ones. So I had to buy this (also NOS) :

Oh, and to finish it off the postman also delivered a NOS M730 QR for the seat post.

It'll need some cleaning and polishing though, and I may need to shorten the thread by half an inch or so.
My Scott has eyelets for the QR on the seat tube, and IIRC those are not far apart. I'll verify this when I get the frame back from the painter.

That's cool Raging _Bulls and it's good to see some original tools acquired for the job as it makes a hell of a difference to mucking about with cheap and nasty equipment ..

So what year is the XT BB then as i thought they'd be hard to get hold of by now .

Re:

Yeah, I really wasn't planning on using half-assed tools for something as important as this. Best to get the proper ones.

According to Velobase the BB-M730 was used between 1987 and 1991. The famous UN-72 BB only appears in the Shimano catalogues from 1992 onwards.

Took a wee run to the bike recyclers, where i find on the fork rack a nice pair of P2's 1 1/8" 200mm.

£7 :D
