still wouldn't call it NOS… closest would be MINT, near NOS.

OK, now I am going to nit pick. Near-NOS is as bad as 'quite unique'. It's an absolute. It either is or it isn't. Also, NOS means new old stock, not perfect condition. If the OP's bike in question was badly fire-damaged and left in the store room of a bike shop for 20 years it'd be far from mint, but it would be NOS. As it is it's not near-NOS, semi-NOS or nuovo-NOS, just NOT NOS.

anyhoo back on topic, I bought my trek from a shop who sold it on ebay after "finding it" in the stock room where it had been rattling about since 1991. it was mint/nos/whatever but it was cheap and I love it. its my daily commuter and original as it ever was.
that gt is in excellent condition but some people actually really do look after their stuff. hats off to him

Thanks to suburbanreuben & Chute55uk for getting the point of the post.
The holy grail of the retrobiker is to find the 15/20 y/o bike that looks like it just rolled out of the bike shop. I post one and everyone gets picky.
