Possibly the same Taiwanese frame manufacturers that have made frames for GT, Kona, Scott, Specialized, Marin etc., as well admittedly as for Townsend, Apollo etc.

Generalisations are usually worthless, including those that use Taiwanese as almost an insult.

Except of course that specialized et al have the benefit of a design team, full material selection, quality control, high volume number and heavy duty contracts ensuring meticulous production, and race team to test ideas out and to prove designs, customer care, liability insurance and a reputation to worry about.

Maybe you shouldn't generalise that all Taiwanese frames are the same either. This is a generic taiwanese frame, not a branded one and there is a big difference.

I've sent an email with pics to Merlin so i'm interested to see what, if anything, comes back!

Didn,t expect this to turn into a discussion on the merits, or otherwise, of mass produced Taiwanese frames though.

I wouldn't worry about the negative comments, especially from someone who can't know what the bike rides like, which surely is the important thing.

It must be difficult to churn out 7000 posts without the odd bit of patronising sh*te. :roll:

Mike from Merlin Cycles returned my email earlier today. Here's what he said.

"Steve,

It is something that we sold a few years back. These were just standard 7005 alu frames badged up with merlin stickers.
I think the frames were on sale for approx £50 or so.

Regards Mike."

So that confirms some of the above comments. Generic, basic, far eastern alu frame badged up by Merlin at one point.

Bike is now stripped down. Decent bits will be sold soonest including frame (probably!). Cheers for the comments. Case closed
