New kid on the block

Hi all my name is Hywel. Live in Waltham Cross and commute into London daily 30 mile roundtrip. Just came across this wonderful site by accident and I like it a lot and plan to pick up mtb'ing. I ride a Marin Nail Trial. Its not the new model as it doesnt have suspension. I guess its early 90's. This bike has been relaiable and strong and I used to treat it badly but since being on this site I have started to look after it well and plan to restore it fully over the summer. I havent seen any like it at all so it makes me feel special when I ride it.

Hi my name is Ed

I've been riding MTBs since just before MBUK came out in 87. First bike was an Emmelle Cougar 12 that got customised with fluoro pink brake cables and narrow 16" wide straight bars that were the trend back then.

Next bike was a 1993 Trek 7000 that got customised to look like the DOGSBOLOX but ended up looking like a cow

Fell out of biking for a while and then picked up a 1995 Ibis Mojo 2 years ago off a mate and treated myself to a Langster for shits and giggles.

The Ibis is going back to said mate as he misses it.

I'm here as bikes are my first love and I hold fond memories of the early MBUK days with John Stevenson, Steve Worland, Tim Gould, David Baker and Pee Wee Hemming etc etc etc etc keeping me enthralled with each edition coming out

p.s if anyone has an Emmelle Cougar 12 in blue 16" frame let me know please :D

Hiya,

My name is Pep. New here and old for cycling ...
I come from classics MTB forum in Spain, where there are always references to this forum and i think it is here where are the best mountain bikes.
My intentions are to trouble the little and learn a lot (although my poor English).

Thanks for hosting me!

Hi Paul here

Not really a fanatic or anything, just own a basic Marin hardtail for off road, and a $5 ( that's pounds excuse the US keyboard) racing bike off ebay for the road.

Only claim to biking fame was cutting through the seatstays of old klunkers (mid 70's) cutting a section out, then bending and bolting them lower down the seatpost, to resemble laid down shocks which were just starting to come out on motor cross bikes. Didn't do much for structural integrity, but looked really cool.

So far bought a few bits off members, skulked round the forums, and made a few silly comments.

Hoping to get involved in a few group rides in the SE, as long as my current bike is acceptable until I get something older and crappier.

I'm Blair-

Just getting back into mtbiking after about a 13 year hiatus! Started as a way to get additional exercise for ski season, but now I'm excited for spring and exploring some trails again!

When I started digging into the sport and my bike, it seemed this site had most of the info i was looking for compared to more "contemporary" mtb resources...

Hello

Hello
I am another newbie to the forum. Started Mountain biking in the early 1990s lost touch with it when I discovered that I could just eat cake instead. Got back into it recently but was shocked to find out my Marin was a retro bike. How old does that make me!!!
Cheers

Another noob

Hey all, new here. Name's Ian, as you can see. Been into biking of various forms since I learned to ride, age 11. Soon after, bought my first mountain bike (with my own money!) - a Holdsworth Electra, of which I've NEVER seen another so what does that mean?? Maybe they only made one which they sold - via Kays catalogue - to me.

Currently rolling two vintage mountain bikes (and a new BMX but that's by-the-by), which are both Dyna-Techs.
Yellow '92 Dyna-Tech Diabolo DX. XT thumbies, DX everything else, Dia compe 987's/SS-5's etc. Currently set up for road use.

Blue '93 Dyna-Tech Diabolo. built up from frame & forks bought from best mate who got it after a warranty claim on a broken frame. Old skool frame, new components - not to everyone's taste. Set up for off road with a few battle scars.

I've also picked up an '89 (or '90) Carrera Krakatoa frame (for just 99p!) that I'm going to do up. Note however, one seatpost - cut off and stuck in frame! Great start!

I did also have an old Raleigh Winner (red/white one) in the loft but someone appears to have thrown it out behind my back.

Another newbie addicted to the old skool.

Good evening people thought id put a hello in here from me.

Im John, im 28 and from Hull in East Yorkshire, i used to be a mad keen biker in my youth but stupidly gave it all up not too long after passing my test.

I have a bike again but its a new skool one (carrera vulcan '08 with a few upgrades) but newer bikes dont seem to hold the passion and enjoyment that the bikes im used to seeing about (in my day) did or indeed still do.

I had a few clunkers as i got into biking, the best one of the bunch was a Raleigh Max chromo I, which was poo really with a full acera-X groupset but i swapped and changed loads of stuff on it and somehow ended up with 95 xt thumb shifters, a hope hubbed front wheel and full Xt iirc, this got stolen one sad night alongside my mates Al Carter DX!

With the insurance pennies i purchased a '96 Giant Track ATX850, bought brand new from my local bike shop (ellerkers) in ball burnished aluminium finish with full stx groupset and black cro-mo forks, this was upgraded with what eventually became a mix of 97-98 XT parts, iirc 98 was the first year the XT came in a four arm crankset, which i converted back to five arm to run middleburn anodised chainrings, she had M600/LX v brakes, Xtr rear mech and an Xt front (top pull bottom swing as these didnt rattle like the top swing ones) i had 97 judy XC forks (cream legs with red decals) and in 99 i got a set of XT hubs built with double butted spokes onto mavic D 521 rims, oh and i had (and still do albeit minus its roller) an anodised blue DCD

I loved this bike and looking back i cannot figure out why i didnt get a car and bike rack as id planned and driven to all the wonderful places id heard about and ridden, hard!

I stripped and sold pretty much everything i once had and the frame went into the shed, i got it back out a few years back and built it back up from spares i had lying about and an old full sus thing i bought from a mate, my dad now uses it as his daily commuter bike.

I love seeing bikes about that i knew from when i was back into it years back, like a few months ago a lad passed me while i was stuck in traffic riding a pro-flex 855/6, i got so excited seeing it i couldve sex-wee'd lol.

Im currently looking through some of the projects and galleries on here and lusting after a 96 GT Zaskar as a pontential retro bike or build basis, or the one ive always lover would have to be the Specialised hardtail with rockshox FSX forks that the legendary JMC rode in the video 'Dirt' speaking of which has anyone converted a copy onto dvd at all or know anywhere to get the soundtrack from, i know its all seperate tracks and i currently have the song clouds, but i love 'this side of heaven' and would love to have a copy!

Anyways enough dribble from me, im off to browse the for sale section again!

Hi,

I just find this forum, and i like it. I used to race in the 90th. I still have my last race frame wich i mount last year after 11 years sleeping in the basement. Its a Symbiosis (Small Quebec compagny) for wich i raced in 98. The frame is custom made for me in (steel) Colombus Max OR ovalized oriented.

Nice to see i am not the only one dreaming of the past.

Nicolas
