After looking around here for while, after my brother (LTS_biker) and a friend (Martin) already signed up a while ago.

Like LTS_biker and Martin I am from The Netherlands.

Altough I am more known as the Weight Weenie of the group, I also have a weak spot for classic bikes.

I also think that alot of manufacturers lost their sense of style over the years and started to build boring black bikes.
Altough it looks like things are getting better again, with more colors etc.

I always was a fan of anodised parts, but could never find those parts anymore (could be that I didn't know it was anodised and not painted )

I started my biking days with a '93 Trek 800 from the Antilope series
in these "lovely"colors: yellow, purple and green but it got stolen.
After that I picked up a trek 830 also a 93 model at the police station for a few bucks (compensation for a stolen bike)
I rode the 830 till 97, upgraded it with a few expensive parts (XT rear mech and STI (even had a M900 STI set but broke it) Flite Titanium and STX-RC crankset (all very expensive parts for a 16 Y.O.)
In 97 I bought a Trek 8000 (96 model) when I was in the States.
I still have the frame, altough it is pretty much a wreck (paintwise)
I always was a Trek fan, I had almost everything from Trek that I could get /afford

In 2004 I finally bought a new bike, this time not a Trek but a Scott.
2003 Scott Pro Racing, and still use it and still looks great.


But now I am working on a retro project.

This time yet again a Trek.

Hi All

Just a quick intro - I've been riding MTB's since 1990, started racing downhill on a C16R with Quadra 10's in the early days of the Scottish Clockwork series, moved up to a B17 with some hooky parts and finally graduated to (whats now almost retro) a 2001 Santa Cruz Bullitt (future classic)

I'm looking to put together a 1990's DH bike to run at the start of next years SDA Series - so far I have...... .well nothing really

Will work on it though and keep you posted.

Well, I've been posting on here for a week or two so may as well introduce myself...

I bought my first atb in 1999, a steel rockhopper, which I'm still riding to work every day. Unfortunately I shoved a screwdriver through the seat tube wall trying to extract a seized seatpost some weeks back, meaning I don't really trust it on anything other than road rides! Doh!

Anyway, I have a Norco 6" full susser but felt that would look silly riding to work, and decided to buy a cheap frame and build it up with most of the parts off my 'Hopper.

Ebay-watching led me to a lovely steel, lightweight purple frame, NOS, which the seller said was a 90's Saracen but couldn't say what model. It arrived in a Saracen box, but it sure don't look like no Saracen to me.

What it is, however, is a matt finish, almost anodised looking, electric blue/purple coulour - a superb colour. It's also very well made, and way, way better than I expected for the money (£20!).

I found this site whilst trying to identify the frame, and something infected me through that contact, because next thing, I'm buying anodised bolts and 90's pink tyres and flat bars and a pair of ancient RS1 forks, with a view to building something vaguely in keeping with the frame's era! Something purple and yellow and...er, pink. :shock: :?

My famous author Mrs said to me last night, sighing..."You won't want to ride that to work, will you?". And she's right. I won't. Already I'm beginning to wonder if I ought to replace the new DDG yellow saddle (unridden!) with something...older.

So, what I need now is to find a cheap frame on ebay, to build into a cheap commuter bike...

Hi there

I haven't had a bike for a while, so when it came to buying one, i thought i would get 'bang for my buck' by something older. I didn't think i would buy a 15 year old bike! Full XTR groupo sucked me in, along with the Syncros post, program tubing and flite saddle. The Manitous were a bit of icing, and considering i won't be doing 30 foot drops, will suffice. Alas, the elastomers are shot.

I used to work in a bike shop a long time ago. I've raced a few times, and couriered for a couple of years ( a long time ago).

I love steel, so don't ask why i bought aluminium. I came across this site looking for elastomers for my 'manis' and was blown away by the interest, adherence to, and worship of 'retro' stuff. Wow!

It ignited something in me that has now started to burn. I find myself trawling through ebay instead of studying. I have a couple of old Mountain Bike Action mags that i will have to dig up, but i think the ones i have have already been posted in the gallery - Crosstrac sonoma etc.

The most memorable bike for me has probably been the AMP research - cutting edge when it came out and the design is still going strong.

Can anyone suggest a way to clean and lube my shifters? Shifting is tight and slow, i think because of the worn cables, but i'm sure a clean and lube would not go astray.

Hi all, just a say hello message. Great site, thought it was only me who liked skinny cromoly framed bikes with fat tyres and steel forks?? I admit to having a full suspension bike ( a Santa Cruz superlight) but also have a GT tequestra that i bought in , i think, the early 90's from Rory O'brians in Romford. In the intervening years I gave it to my father-in -law, who has recently decided he can no longer ride. I went around a few weeks ago to pick it up and was a bit shocked how tired it looked. After a few weeks work, I have replaced the front mech, new BB bearings, new wheel bearings, new flat bars as the old ones were black painted steel and had rusted, serviced the head set and canti's and put new gear cables on. Also touched up a few stone chips and scratches as best i could and waxed the frame. I have just been out on it in the woods and got it all muddy again!
