The Immigration Debate........

My opinion is;

a) Everyone is welcome as long as they're willing to contribute that includes the current population who won't do the jobs the migrants are happy to do.

b) If you won't work then regardless of how long you can trace your roots back in this country you'll be politely asked to leave, if that does not work you'll be forced to leave.

c) All the talk of losing the culture is bullshit, the culture now is not the same as it was 50 years ago or 500 years ago, culture and standards evolve.

I can get behind that sentiment.

...........for the worse

In many of the countries that we accept immigrants from Life is cheap, women are classed as second class citizens and animals are seen as unclean etc etc, do you think attitudes will change when they arrive here? I dont. Tiddles the cat may end up in the pot for dinner

We had similar standards here not so long ago, opinions evolve and they're more likely to change to the current attitude here if they live here, if you want women to be treated as equals and animals to be respected then the quickening of the evolution in those countries through migration to more 'modern & western' countries will mean those standards trickle back.

I work around the country and stay away a fair bit, so generally we find we have to use local labour from agencies.

If I get english/british labourers there will almost always be something that goes wrong. I've heard every excuse under the sun, from needing to pick up his dole money(???!!!) to ill pets/kids/forgot my lunch/no cscs card/no helmet/gloves/boots/hi viz. That's if they turn up - I generally get through 3 labourers to find one good one, and there's every chance the good ones aren't around for very long as they get snapped up (which is what I always thought agencies were about - getting yourself a foot in the door). It is a constant lottery and has been quite frankly embarassing at times.

If I get a foreign worker then 95% of the time they will be there before me with all the kit they need and will work like a trojan. The last labourer I had even asked if he could stay after I'd gone to get his hours up.

The problem with immigration is we have created a lazy workshy generation who think Simon Cowell is going to hear them singing in the shower and make them rich, and that they should have the latest phone/console/iThing for nowt.

The 'immigrants' are only filling a void we have created.

Also who is the immigrant? You only have to add history to this debate to see that we are all immigrants to some degree. Nick Griffin's 10,000 year bullshit forgets about Roman, Saxon and Norman invasion for a start as well as many other mass immigrations in our history.

I'll not hold my breath. You'd need to persuade them that religion is a load of pish first.

Why do people keep focusing on the economic factors associated with immigration, is it perhaps that that's what politicians try to hammer home in every interview in order to justify immigration!? How about the social impacts?
Moreover why do we have to import doctors and nurses all of a sudden, why do we need so many unskilled labourers, oh yes to facilitate the growing rate of immigration onto this tiny island, to care for them when sick, to build social housing to home them! Why can't little Johnny down the road be doctor, or nice but dim mick be the labourer, we managed all right up until 14 years ago!
Don't forget we need immigrants to grow economically and prosper as a great western economy.... So they tell us! However the country is crippled financially and immigration is at it's highest ever, is there a correlation.....

To answer your question , no . The population is growing anyway as we live longer , maybe immigration exacerbates the situation . Unless we leave the EU we cannot control it . And that is a whole new debate on it's own !
The world is crippled financially . We need more doctors and nurses to look after more people , both from longer life expectancy and immigration . These people obviously need housing . Doctors and nurses are an asset to society , unlike those that choose not to work . They are  not all from other countries .
