Re:

There's a small white three pin plug at the far right corner of the controller board in the pic, If you short the three pins together it removes the laser interlock so you can run it with the lid off. The door lock doesn't matter once you've done this.

There is also a shorting plug for the mains connection, so you can unplug the mains switch cable, and plug in the shorting plug (loose on the mains supply card) and power it up with the lid off.

Yours may simply be a duff laser then? What does the display do? Does it find the disc and the track numbers or not?

So could be the focus drive circuit (or can you see the lens moving back and forth?), or the laser. Might be an idea to see if the laser is working - some digital cameras have sensitivity in this band, so you may well see it that way - if you disable the laser safety interlock.

The mechanism comes out easily enough so maybe I could send my known good unit to you to try if you don't get anywhere (or vice versa - though the mech is smaller and lighter than the whole player!)

The emphasis led keeps going on and off with the interlock mechanism going clickety click. Lens was filthy. Lazer works. Lens focusses but nobody Home yet

Oooohhh, I've seen that on mine! It seems to be PSU current limiting related as when it's doing it, the +5v seems to be dipping. Have you got any jamming of the laser platform or does it move smoothly?

Re:

Looks like a prototype to me. Wonder if it is a forerunner of the one with 'Mission' cast into the front panel? Or maybe 'USA market only'?

If it was cheap and in the UK, I'd be interested just out of curiosity.
