the coolest mtb's...

The coolest bikes are the ones you've got the best memories of and had the most fun with.

Be that riding, owning, building, or drooling in shop windows/magazines.

One of my friends has a Ritchey Everest from 1981. ($600 on Ebay, half what it sold for new, 20 years earlier!) At that time the demand was low, and Tom Ritchey could take his time on each bike.

They are jewelry, but there aren't more than a couple of hundred in the world, if that many. This is the nicest "retro" mountain bike anyone could ever own.

I like his bike more than I like my 1983 Ritchey Annapurna, also a super retro bike.

It belongs to the rider who pasts as Laffeaux on MTBR, where you are all over the place also. He lives in Idaho but came to Marin this weekend and joined Gary and me yesterday on the Annual Appetite Seminar. His website is oldmountainbikes.com

BTW, my comment on the wheels on MTBR was not because I remember every set I ever built, but because all our machine built wheels used Araya rims. and the decal dates the bike to when I was building them. If your wheels are machine built, they will have a sticker from Wheelsmith in Palo Alto.

Agree with that hence my love of Yetis

Never owned one but always drooled over them, maybe it's time to find one!

I totally agree with all of that - my sentiments exactly ! Must be the reason that my '88 Explosif is "cool" (to me) but my poor '93 RM Blizzard has never achieved that status (not in my eyes, at least).
