Any ideas for the BEST hardtail ever made?

I've finally decided that after a few full sussers that I prefer hardtails. This is because I ride on relatively flat terrain and I hate the fact that the rear suspension absorbs some of my energy, especially when pedaling standing up.

Also, what is the best material? steel, aluminium, titanium or carbon?

SUMMARY 05.11.12:

To me it looks like its between the Stumpy, Clockwork / Prestige and Zaskar?!?!?

Hardtail

Yeti Arc (alu)?

Kona Hei Hei (ti)?

I'll put these on here as they're the best hardtail's I've owned to date.

Also ridden:

GT Zaskar / Pace (alu) and Orange / Marin / DeKerf / Kona (steels)

I must admit I do like the steelie's!

Klein Attitude MC1

most inventive, with many innovations only recently adopted by the mainstream.

Early Zaskar. That's it.
Owning a early rigid Zaskar (1992) I would disagree. My 1995 rigid Stumpjumper while, no noodle rides better, Handles at least as good , better IMO, and definitely wins the grin contest hands down. I just don't see a Aluminum framed non suspension corrected bike beating out a over sized Tange Prestige frame with a dialed in geometry.
