The “Richie” Brodie Romax #257 restoration ( 1987 fillet brazed )

This bike has nothing to do with Tom “Ritchey” but was once owned by another “Richie”, a legend in his own right, ( Rich Sanford of Tofino, Vancouver Island, Canada & previously Deep Cove, North Vancouver ) who is no longer with us and this bike build is dedicated to him and is being returned to the Sanford Family after 35 ish years.

Richie gave this bike to a good friend of mine ( David P. of Deep Cove, North Vancouver ) who has had it since the early 90s and has held onto it all these years. This is not my bike, but I helped him bring it back to life with this build. It was a team effort all the way along IMG_9608.JPG

Here is the finished bike:
20.5 inch 1987 Brodie Romax with internal cable in top tube and Brodie pump braze on.
Shimano Deore XT group 7 spd SIS & friction shifting.
Nitto chromoly fillet brazed black chrome stem
Very rare “Black” Magura brake levers ( from Paul Brodie’s parts stash – Paul sold to me at the retro bike swap meet ). You can't beat Magura or Tomaselli brake levers on an 80s mountain bike ! These were motorcyle levers originally and then used on early mountain bikes. IMG_9567.JPG

Here is the frame before restoration
Rusted chain stay brace ( water into fender screw mount ) but the rest of frame was solid
Crack in the rear dropout brazing

Frame Restoration:
Here it is after frame brazing restoration/ sand blasting .
The welding/brazing fix was an awesome job done by Toby at Toby Cycles Works in Vancouver ( builder of the Skull Skates Cruiser bike frames )
The frame issues/restoration is very similar to Ryan’s #Ryry_1985 #279 Brodie Romax Rescue with brazing fix done by Paul Brodie himself - you can't beat that ( there are Youtube videos of this ) , but I think Toby’s work is top notch quality ! IMG_9286.JPG

Painting:
Here are the frame and forks being primed and painted, with micro dents/scratches filled in.
Before painting the lower chainstays / internal cable tubes were filled with Por15 Rust Remover for several days to eliminate any possible residual internal rust, with silicone used to seal it in.
We went with the original metallic green color scheme but added some subtle bling with a color changing paint that changes to metallic purple in the right light. ( There were no purple 3DV (purple anodized parts ) in 1987 so this had to do ). IMG_9436.JPG IMG_9442.JPG

History:

I’m told this bike originally belonged to Eric Crowe of Whistler bike racing fame who past it along to Richie S. and then to David P.
Supposedly Paul Brodie used to give out these frames as prizes for winning mountain bike races back in the day. Maybe this was one of these prizes
