That old chestnut again...

Re:

when clearing out the garage a while back before we moved I took a stack of old land rover parts to sell at an autojumble, the Mrs kindly baked a stack of brownies to keep us going as a couple of mates came along as well to help out. What with the brownies and our camping stove the best strategy would have been to give brownie and a cupper away with any £10 purchase.

Lead Into Gold Syndrome. As in, your stuff's lead. My stuff's gold. One only has to compare posts from the same names in the FS and WTD forums to see it. Came across a wanted post for an iconic Italian made seat. Offered the member a NOS Ti railed version for $70 shipped. Got screamed at via PM for being quote "a blight on the community". The next week I saw a for sale post by the same member, one item of which was a used Taiwaneese seat with a regarded US frame maker's name silk screened on it for the bargain price of $109.

Sounds about right.

George Carlin said it perfectly on his "stuff" speech: "Have you noticed that their stuff is shit and your shit is stuff? God! And you say, "Get that shit offa there and let me put my stuff down!"

Best way to know how much your stuff is really worth is to put it on sale, not whatever you think is worth. That works for bikes, houses, or any other thing.

This is the reason I don't do "upgrades" and try to keep the "parts bin" to a minimum. Most people won't pay even close to what I think is worth, so if I want something fancy or new, the old part has to be sold/wear out first...

I always laugh when I see the local "craiglist" in my city. Some people have crazy asking prices for some components or bikes, and they just take 1 crappy picture, in the garage, with their mobile phone. Sure, I can wait to give you 800 EUR for that thing with wheels on your add...!!

Re:

The market has changed a lot over the years IMO.

Back when I first started there seemed to be loads of new people joining and lots of tidy mid range bikes were being built. The DX, LX and even lower gear easily found a home as some one was restoring a Lava Dome, Rock Hopper or Tufftrax.

These days it seems that the market has matured with less new people and us older members having a less scatter gun approach to our collections. Personally I've had so much DX over the years that I never need to see another bike with it on! I have less time to build so wait for vgc higher end kit. Decent M730/2/5 XT or M900 XTR goes for far more than it ever used to so I assume many are in the same boat as me.

Add to this the increase in postage costs and it becomes hard to be bothered to sell the lower grade stuff.
