Tesco 'value' bar-ends

Its no wonder the small LBS are going out of business,, this makes me so mad

last year I left my job with a distributor. One of the reasons was they supply a few of the supermarket/cat/sports companys. I had been behind the IDB counter for a few years an it P#@*$s me off how this kind of business de-values every other similar quality product being sold through IDB's

ASDA are part of WALMART, here in Canada you can get 9-speed chains at WALMART for $10 (5 pounds) and tires (tyres ;) ) for about the same. The staff know as much about bikes as they do about picking their noses, the reason you pay more at an LBS is because the staff know and love bikes and will sell you the best parts you can afford having figured out what is best suited to you and your bike. If you are badly treated or talked down to at an LBS, go to another one, but don't buy parts based solely on price, otherwise when you want something a bit special there may be nowhere left to buy it.

Great advice for a city dweller... but there AREN'T any local bike shops here. The nearest one is about half an hour's drive, and generally only does repairs and cheap kids bikes; a LBS here simply wouldn't be viable.

Since I see no reason to call the nearest semi-useful "bike shops" local (they're 3/4 of an hour's drive away) and none of them are all that good, I'll stick to buying stuff that I want online (or at Lidl!) If I want advice on something, there's always retrobike :)
