Tell me about these twisted spokes?

It was all a happy accident when during the wheel build stud lock was accidently used instead of lubricant on the spoke threads. The only way to tension up the wheels was to twist the spokes. Et voilà, Bob's yer uncle!

I have a set of (26") wheels in the attic that were built up by Sonic Cycles back in 97.
They have wiggly/zig-zag spokes and are a proper PITA to true up.
But hey, they look cool when spinning ;) 🤣

It’s been suggested that the spokes were twisted by the wheel builder rather than manufacturer?

They are perfectly done and identical. Almost too good to be done by a person I think.

I'd have thought they would be very difficult to grip tight enough to do that. in wire you usually put a bend in one end to provide leverage, in smithing you hammer a flat in and use a massive looking tong to do the same.
