Technical shock mounting question - please humour me?

For old times sake ive purchased a bike I had stolen donkeys years ago.

This isnt the one ive boughtbut has the same frame and that is where my question begins......

The frame takes a 170mm eye to eye shock - problem being that the modern shocks today do not come in that length.

People do and have simply used a longer or shorter shock but have then adversely buggered up the geometry. 165mm (shorter stroke than original) or a 190mm shock (correct stroke but 20mm too long)

So looking at this picture - could i alter the style of the bolt on plates to accomodate a longer shock?

yeah there is that option but i already have a 190mm shock to go on.

You could change the bolt on part and use offset DU bushes to get the right shock length, but its best to keep the shock running on the same axis as the original.

You could just run more sag on the longer shock to correct for the extra length too, but this will limit the available travel.

Personally I go for a shock the correct length.

youll see a similar thing done to a yamaha lc swing arm (lc jack up kits)
common practice for them these days

the other thing might be to contact mojo or tim flooks and get the shock
shortened
your local moto cross shop might be helpfull here to

I am sure one of the manitou shocks Chainreaction currently have on sale comes in 170 x 48 flavour.

Can't remember which one though.
