Alloys are cheap and plentiful on Gumtree and Ebay. You ought to be able to find compatible local ones with good rubber for less than a ton.

Should improve handling, as long as you don't go large with thin rubber. I don't think that would work well without suspension upgrades.

I feel this may be the only post I am likely to make where I can agree with both Bats and you at once! I don't personally like French cars but I do like quite ordinary older cars that have been really well kept and in their original condition. I think it looks just right as is... you could spend the extra cash on bikes instead :)
