just snagged a 98 M2 stumpy for a song in that ace Mango colour they did

I've always kinda wanted one, but actually don't know much about them....

Didn't get on with one when I took it for a spin. Found it pretty harsh and it's very stretched, very racer style geometry.

Personal preference and all though. Obviously well made frames and weigh little.

I'll never forget my first ride on mine when I bought it in '97.

So fast and direct compared to what I was used to. Every ounce of power went direct to the rear wheel, or at least it felt like that to me. It skipped over the trail like a flighty thoroughbred and I loved it.

Fast forward 15 years and after a break from cycling for a few years it felt stiff, harsh and stretched out. Every bump on the trail went directly from the rear wheel up my spine, or at least it felt like that to me.

If you have the fitness and commitment to ride it as it's meant then I think you would struggle to find better. If you are a fat old man then it's not the bike for you!

I've got one and love it, same year as yours but in Mountain Dew green...

Mines got Maverick SC32 front forks as the standard Judys are poo, I've also added a load of Ritchey Classic kit and some sexy red Hope bits. I bought it back in the day with my first full time pay packet, and may well go with me to the grave.

Too unforgiving for me, coming from Kona's I missed the 'poppy' exciting feel that I was used to. For XC very efficient though IMHO

Strange that. I had a Stumpy M4 Pro that I bought because I was getting old and I thought it would be more comfy for my old joints/back. Actually found that even after short rides I had alot more back pain than I ever get on my Klein Attitude therefore ended up practically giving the frame away on ebay after very little use.

I did wonder though if it was because I expected the rear end to 'take the blows' and therefore remained seated where as on a hardtail I take alot more through my legs whilst standing.

Sorry for going off topic......

Re:

I've kind of fancied one of these myself, remember them BITD, mango , red or light green IIRC, and thought they were cool then. Now they're old, that makes them even cooler, right?
As the owner of two alooooominum bikes, I do find that riding them does give me back problems, due to - IMO - the stiffness of the back end.
TBH, if someone wanted to swap a steel frame for one of my alloy ones, I'd bite their hand off .
We're all different though, so hope you enjoy it as much as I like looking at them ;)
