Re: T-minus 7 days… and counting (1991 Altitude)

thanks! the chainsuck on my frame is much worse than yours. there are also areas where the paint is scratched/scrapped off. hoping i can do a decent job at touching up the paint.

took a bit of time using some rubbing compound to take out some of the scratches and numerous black marks off the frame. most of it came out fairly nicely and it looks better than when first received. discovered that the decals are under clearcoat, so even though i have replacement RM decals for the downtube and RM logos for the head/seat tube, i can't replace the faded/damaged decals unless i carefully sand off the clearcoat first.

so i've loosely hung some parts onto the frame to get a sense of how it looks. don't mind the stem and the wheelset, those won't be used. now having the frame in hand, i've found i have a few more options, as always with me , for cranks.

  • a) yellow set of RF turbine LPs. fair amount of wearing but matches quite nice.
    b) black RF turbine IB with gold spyder, currently on my black 95 Blizzard. ignore the black/silver, no longer have those.
    c) silver RF turbine IB with red spyder, just snagged and will be shipped shortly, identical to the set currently on my Cirrus.

thoughts??? :)

Looks awesome :)

I think the RF yellow is a little too fluorescent for the frame, it could just be the photo though?

Are the spiders removable/ interchangeable on those IB cranks? If so I would go for the Black arms with the red spider

Re: T-minus 7 days… and counting (1991 Altitude)

it's not fluoro, but it is a tad lighter. guess i'll leave them for the 96 Vertex TO as I had intended.

as for the spyder, yes in theory you should be able to interchange them.

however the way they are mounted vary between compact and standard. also i don't fancy taking the risk of removing the lock ring on the compact. not sure if any bonding is involved, and don't want to ruin a set trying. it has a set of holes in it like some older BBs which you have to use a pin spanner to install/remove. if you've ever used a pin spanner with a BB, it's not the most confident method of tightening/loosing.

Nice find RM!
Have you thought about going full factory spec? I know you love those RaceFace cranks so it would be a bit of a change, but you've got the fork and seatpost dialed. The rest would be XT hubs and derailleurs with Ritchey cranks, brake levers and brakes, and a Syncros stem.
At some point you really need to haul all your bikes out into the light of day and get a family shot.

Very nice Frank. There seems to have been a few Altitdues about in the last year but I love the way this looks in the smaller size

Scott, I have a hard enough time trying to get a period year correct build up and running, and you want me to go even one step further and do a factory spec? Think I'd have a hard time finding myself a Rocky Mountain Turbo saddle. :|

"Our" size always looks best! ;)

Re: T-minus 7 days… and counting (1991 Altitude)

Just stick an XT crank on it.

RaceFace, no. Even the original gold ones you have are 2 years later.

Now do you have any proper GripShift and tubeless tyres? Team Spec is the way to go. You have the Ringle Q/R I assume?
