Dirt Disciple
Hi Im in the middle of restoring a 1990 Kona Lavadome with a Suntour X-1 groupset and require help. I'm attempting to strip the rear hub, however don't have the specific tools or know the direction of the thread. The picture provided is off the net (3:00am just finished work and buggered if I'm going out to the garage to take photos). The securing nut with two holes in is recessed, is there a tool available to remove this?

I think you need two chainwhps to remove the cassette. The smallest two cogs act as the lock ring. I could be wrong though!

On a 7's powerflow cassette it's just the smallest cog that acts as the lock ring (much like uniglide), on the 8's the two bottom are joined and you just use the whip on the second cog.

Carl.

Check if it's freewheel or freehub.
Cassettes you use two chainwhips.
6/7/8 speed all the same*
One to hold the large rings pushing 'forward' aka clockwise
One to I unscrew the smallest ring 'backwards' aka anti-clockwise.

It may not undo ;-)

Freeweheels you get the right tool, thought two holes is different to the ones I've seen. But some may have used them.

*7/8 speed cassettes with an 11tooth aka MicroDrive cog are a bit different, you unscrew from the 2nd to last cog, not the smallest. But you'll not have that.

Edit to add.

I'll scan in a better copy. It's sat next to my scanner with other stuff but I just need to do it sometime.
