SUNTOUR..... (?weird looking freehub)

I seem to have ended up with two concurrent sunour projects.
I am comfortable with shimano stuff but now feel a bit out of my depth (again).

So, I'm trying to keep both both bikes faithful to what they got and what they were. My problem is with suntour freewheels/cassette + shifter compatability.. Can I stick with the suntour derailleurs? I want to but what about the cassette? has anyone got a spare lockring? one bike came with a load of cogs just floating around the rear axle and the freehub looks like it was designed in osaka on acid?

As for the deralieur mechs you can use them no problem. The mechs have nothing to do with indexing, its the shifters that do this. Indexing with Suntour is not quite the same as Shimano unfortunately but friction shifters are again not a problem.

Suntour thumbshifters combined with Suntour derailleurs and Shimano 7 speed cassettes should work together. If you MIGHT run in trouble you could always use a Shimano guide pulley with laterally floating bearing.

I agree . For the cassette, 7s on suntour or shimano used the same space between cogs. But the hyperglide was smoother and more precise.

The main difference between shimano and suntour : Suntour was not a brand which made all the part from the crank to the cable, but an association with sevral maker like Sugino for the cranks, Dia Compe for the brakes… With the problem of keeping homogeny parts.
Suntour was more lightweight than Shimano but not as strong in time.

Thats not a freehub its a freewheel minus its sprockets. Looks like one that requires a 4 pin remover tool.

aah! do you mean these sprokets that I call the 'cassette'..?

the second one is missing half it's teeth.

Most freewheels of recent times are assembled in a similar way to a freehub cassette, that is sprockets sliding on to splines. They are secured in place either by a threaded small sprocket or a lockring.

Might be easier just to remove the Suntour freewheel and replace with a complete Shimano one.
