Stuff you own but daren't use?

I think this isn't exactly what the OP had in mind, but:

Topline 94/56 BCD crank arms. I had them mounted to a commuter bike as a 44/30 double. Then they started to creak a lot. Did I mention I'm about 220lbs. dry?

Yeah, the thought of skewering my calf on a broken crank arm eventually drove me to remove them, they are now wall art.

Same here with my NOS Tioga Disc Drive Pro... currently built on an XC Pro rear hub/Araya RM-20 rim and in my KLEIN Attitude, that hasn't a crankset yet. Really afraid to wreck the Disc Drive.

But I'll be putting on a black Top Line crank next week, and since I lost about 28lb of body weight, I am thinking it'd be safe to have a spin on it now.

It's gonna happen some day anyway, maybe just one ride and if it brakes I'll just build a normal XC Pro/Araya RM-20 wheel

manitou fs framenumber 9. afraid to crack if i rode it

I think a Manitou frame is the exception for everyone, even the "use everything" brigade.

No idea why they are so sought after if they are virtually guaranteed to crack.

I have a similar dilemma. When I first acquired my '92 Explosif Pro I went on a crazed ebay hunt for those components that wear out with regular use, fearing that I wouldn't be able to find vital parts when the originals wore out. I've now got NOS Suntour XC Pro cassettes, chainrings and a mint Impact headset just sitting on a shelf.

As I tend to only take the bike out on dry days and isn't abused like my modern bikes, I can't see when I'm realistically going to use these parts and I feel slightly guilty that I'm depriving another Retrobiker of the bits they need to keep their bike running.

I just don't want to put them back on ebay in case I need them next week!

but isn't that the point of "collecting"? sometimes ppl purchase items for the sake of owning as opposed to using. i don't see it any different than people collecting coins or stamps, once used they no longer hold their value.

granted in general i purchase bike stuff in the intent of mounting on a bike and making use of, hence i tend to stay away from rare minty or NOS stuff. but on the odd part here and there, i'm perfectly content on just having it sit on a shelf, as i don't have too many in my collection.
