Stuck brake post / shim

Hello all - I wonder if you can help

I took delivery of a lovely Trek 9800. I have stripped it down slowly and I have come across a stubborn shim (from some Xtr canti brakes) that seems welded onto the brake pivot

Any suggestions on what fluid / method gets it off? I have tried copious WD40 and just can’t get pliers on to it (too smooth)

To clarify the first picture is one I think it should look like the second is the problem!

If its truly stuck i would be tempted to just buy another set of brake bosses, cheap enough. They just screw out using the flat edges at the bottom.

Plusgas has always released anything stuck for me before....

Gentle heat cycle would help

I'd try and get a thin blade in between the shim and then of the boss (frame end) and try and gently work it in further which should start to push it up and away.

Assume you want to keep the shim for later use or I'd suggest more aggressive options.

One tool that might work without doing too much damage is a pipe wrench. You might be able to slot it on the shim and wind the shim loose.

Thanks all, I will slowly work through these - starting with some Plusgas, interesting that there are 4 very valid responses; chemical, heat, mechanical, practical.

Thanks all. A bit of Plusgas and properly adjusted mole wrench and it slid off.
