stuck bottom bracket...

Having spent a week trying to remove a BB using a tin of penetrating oil and brut force (and yes - use the trick of using a bolt and some big washers to hold the tool in place) - my last resort was using a paint removal hot air gun.

The BB was released in 30 seconds, with no damage to the paint.

whack the axle out then hack saw the cup out. when i say hack saw i mean put the blade through the bb then attach handle. i love seized up bb's it becames a mission its great

Now we're talking my language :D :D Trouble is I can see a bent frame with me doing something like that...

Way up north - where did you apply the heat, to the bb or the frame??

Outside of the bottom bracket shell. The aim is to expand the shell and crack the bond between it and the BB inside. Ideally the BB should be as cold as possible.

Take your frame to Iceland and drop it onto one of their freezers. I find the pizza section easiest as you can stack the boxes back on top quickly before one of the staff appear. If you wear a red polo shirt that also helps the stealth approach.

either you are not trying hard enough or your not trying hard enough. Above method worked on bikes that have been open to the elements for 10 years plus.

Try harder. Longer pole! More mates! More leverage!

Good luck. ;)

when the frame started to move I stopped....

I know this frame, I know the guy thats had it since 94 and I know some of the god awful conditions we raced in in the last 16 years (in fact I spent a good 5 or 6 years chasing this bike through various race series in the south east) - tbh im surprised its still turning...

i think its time for a lump hammer due to the fact that short sharp shocks with lump hammer puts four times as much pressue than you can with that big lever.

just take away the bar and whack the handle of your rachet handle really hard 3 or 4 times. either the rachet will go or the bracket. please be sure the rachet is going the right way.

thanks andy
