Stuart Frame - Is it a Holdsworth?

Re: Stuart/Holdsworth

I have a c1970 Stuart, which is in reality a Holdsworth Super Mistral....having it renovated at Vaz finishers and AW Cycles at present.

Wasn't Clive Stuart involved in the Holdsworth tie up in some way I think I heard/was told he built the custom frames for Holdsworth at some time could be remembering wrong

Re: Holdsworth/Stuart

Not sure about Clive Stuart, but “Stuart Lightweight Cycles” was originally Stuart Purves, ex Claud Butler. From the address on my frame, I guess he had sold the business by that time. It was common to buy in frames from a reputable producer, and put own brand on. I believe early Specialized bikes were actually imported Holdsworth frames?

There wasn't a 'Clive Stuart' as an individual person, the name is that of 2 brothers who had the Clive Stuart chain of shops in the 70's. I can't recollect hearing of any Holdsworth link with them.

EDIT - just read Roadking's post which has already explained this. Ooops

Re:

Since this thread has been bumped I'd better note here that thanks to dwscrimshaw's Holdsworth number threads I now recognise my Holdsworth Special 034*** to be likely 1981, rather than 'mid '80s' as stated upthread. Notwithstanding that, every lug, braze-on and detail is, as I said, identical to those on this Stuart frame.

Re:

Interesting, I have just obtained an identical Stuart bike, but this one has the frame number 3283 and a name stamped on the bottom bracket as well, so far I’ve only made out the first part which is David?
