Strongest bolt up skewers?

Am looking at swapping the solid axle (100/135mm) wheels in our tandem to a 36h Deore hub pair intended for jump bike use - having an engineering background and 30+years of riding on all manner of hubs I am happy they are up to the job, possibly even safer than the current axles

BUT, I want to run bolt up skewers and I am not convinced the alloy head ones I have are as strong as they could be

Anyone point me to some tough bolt up CrMo skewers (pref UK)

Re:

As far as I know the only all chromo skewers are the ones found on really cheap wheels and are not usually sold separately. I don't know much about tandems but normally you can't go wrong with shimano ones

thanks folks -might go through my old QRs and see which ones have CrMo bolts

alas my reading of many bolt up skewer reviews (inc Halos linked to) show plentiful breaks, either in the thread or head of skewer

I think, in the real world, you can replace the word "tandem" with jump or downhill bike, if it can last with that abuse then it will probably be a decently serviceable item for a Tandem (accepting that most any item used on a tandem is a consumer disposable not consumer durable)

I'd urge caution on checking them with an extra nip too often. Better to undo then do up again.

Reason is im using thse security skewers and a couple of weeks ago, giving it a little tweak I've overdone it and one end parted with the other with a bang. Did actually go under the fridge.

This was just using a bog standard folding park allenkey, not the long torque ones.

I was a little unsure of their ability not to loosen off, hence the checking it too much. Just though I'd add this snippet in. :)

Cant say which, but its the ones witht he security allenkey, the one with the bit in the middle. Moved on to M-part. And I've resisted to urge to keep checking them

Unless you want to use allen head skewers for security reasons, do yourself a favour and just use Shimano enclosed cam skewers.

Even the cheapest ones you can find will do an infinitely better job of holding your wheels on than any allen head skewer will.

+1.
The material of the shimano skewers is far better suited to the job than any of the bolt ups ice seen. You can also get a far better end load if you fit it properly .
Only strength upgrades from shimano QR is to either through or nutted axle.

Agreed. Several thousand miles on my touring tandem loaded with panniers with stock STX skewers and hubs are the proof. Shimano or Campag skewer designs with the internal cam remain the best.

Is this quest for strong skewers born out of something you've experienced or based on what the internet says?

Shimano skewers are nicely made, durable and reliable. XT level seems to be the pick.

The fulcrum skewers on my posh roadie wheels seem really nice too (but they are probably Campag as mentioned above)

never had a Shimano QR skewer fail in 40 years of use, but we had a fair few bolt up ones come back to the shop I worked in - and yes internet reviews also mention some breaking shafts and occasional chocolate soft alloy nuts

I am looking for Tandem use here so looking at risk minimising really - have a fair few old Shimano CrMo QR skewers so will probably go down the QR route rather than bolt up
