Stripped threads alert!

I need to get a chain set off with stripped threads. I've tried heating it up and whacking it to no avail. I don't really want to keep it for future use, any help would be welcome please? Cheers.

take the bolt out and go for a little ride,
it might do the trick?

also a mechanics "ball joint splitter" could do the trick, it may mark your BB cups though

What crank set and what BB is it?

It's a square taper BB, not sure of the make. The chain set is a no name rubbish one off a low end mid nineties Saracen.

I've managed to strip the threads on a square taper crank arm, fortunately a cheap and nasty one on my "shopping" bike. For the time being I've left it, but it will have to come off when I next need to replace the bottom bracket.

I was considering drilling a hole a hole through the crank, next to the taper and if that alone dosen't make it loose enough, I could also saw down to the hole and possibly use an old screwdriver to open the gap a little.

I made a puller from 2" by 2" square tubing... I have several "specialty" pullers I have made.... Look at the picture, and pretend the slot in the bottom is wide enough to go around the spindle... If you don't have access to a tap set, you can just pot a nut on the inside and hold it with a wrench...... The one in the picture is small, and is for pulling little gears from electric motors....

Now if only you could make one for seat posts, you would have a killer app tool!

I have made several seat tube pullers... I made clamps that held the post, and long legs that went down either side of the seat tube and pushed against the bottom bracket... Only problem with my design was the top clamp... If you used it, the post would get thrashed... A little rubber or something on the clamp would fix that though...

Someone will probably ask....

The legs were made from truck/ hot rod tie rods, and the to clamp was a modified clamp used on a hydraulic press... The ones you use for gear pulling...

I used tie rods because they are heavy duty, and have large threaded ends..and, I am a mechanic, and they are easy for me to get... If you cant get ahold of them, you can use any decent fairly thick walled tubing.. Even iron plumbing pipe can be used... then just ad an extra nut to ride on the top of the pipe, and you are golden...

You could even get fancy and segment the legs to make it useable on different frame sizes...
