Right, I had another look this afternoon. I think the strange kinda fault is down to 2 things...

1. There is a black plastic cap on top of the front mech where the adjuster screws pass through into the metal body, this was detached a few days back (bloody modern crap) and I assumed it didn't do a lot so I removed it. On inspection I see it helps to stop the adjuster screws from coming loose. They were loose.

2. I think the scraping and clearance issues I've had may be due to a dodgy shifter. It seems when shifting up to the large chainring that the shifter is not moving as much as it should. It clicks into place but if you push the paddle there's another 5 mm of movement. To be fair it's an old shifter that was very gritty when I got it, I gave it a good clean but maybe I have to admit it's shagged.

what do you guys think, does the shifter sound kaput from my description?

i think the sensble option is to take the shifter off and see how it behaves on another bike OR try another shifter on the clockwork to see if you still get issues.

I think you're right. I don't have another suitable bike, nor any spare shifters. I'm looking for some replacements if any of you have any 3x8 speed shifters to sell...
