STORAGE and SECURITY

So as i find my bike collection growing almost out of control i've been left with one or two dilemmas, first regarding neat and tidy storage and the other being making sure they're safe!

Where storage is concerned I have a fairly large garage but whats the best way to store my bikes without them cluttering up the place or scratching one another, Hang, mount or stand? There are plenty of options out there but but none of them shout out I'm the best one. Maybe a mixture but that brings problems with security as using big chunky chains aren't great when you've got your bike on a wall mount or hooks, especially more than one.

What I'd like to see is pic's of your innovitive or just plain and simple but effective storage and security solutions so myself and others can learn from copy or steal your great ideas and leave the house everyday knowing our babies are safe and when the missus goes in the garage all the bikes don't fall over around her when she's trying to find something because she's bumped into them.

thanks

Just been having the same dilemma!
Currently got them all next to each other in the corner of the garage and it's a pain when I want to ride the one at the back and then have to put them all next to each other again without scratching the paint.

I use one of these for the regularly used: http://www.parrs.co.uk/cid/QTO8NB7H4SWU ... s-T824.htm

Not perfect, but as I know I'm not going to go pulling on them, risk of wheel bending is zero. Mine go in rear wheel, with bars canted to the side so its easy to extract the one I want - just shift to small cog at the back to ensure rear mech clears the support.

Less used stuff is on a wall mounted support thats know longer available - probably easier to knock the wall down than remove it.

Bonus security measures (locks, anchors etc) as required.

I hang mine top n tail from roof hooks.

As for security I secure the garage, bolts, locks, window bars, drop bars to the garage door. The way I see it no matter what you do to secure the bikes if the scum can get into the garage they'll probably have all the time and tools they need to unlock the bikes.

"The way I see it no matter what you do to secure the bikes if the scum can get into the garage they'll probably have all the time and tools they need to unlock the bikes." Thats a very good point, had thought about bolts on the up and over but what would i do with the pvc style door and panel at the back?

I'd seen those parrs racks, very simple but likeing the roof hooks too, do you have anything supporting them underneath to stop the whole weight being on the rim? It might sound daft but i had only thought of hanging them side on

the back room at my LBS has a series of bog standard hooks (you'll find something suitable in b&q or similar - they will be called garage hooks or garage tidy's etc.)

with the bikes hanging as shown above. unless your trying to swing on the frame there is no reason why the rims should take any damage - the chances are you weigh a lot more than the bike and the wheels dont get damaged when you sit on one!

I've recently been going through the same dilema. Under normal circumstances, I'd be a little worried about my garage security, but I have four young boys who leave the garage door open a lot for any yahoo walking by to see all that's inside.

Luckily I have two large walk in closets in my master bedroom and easily get by using just one for the normal stuff. So...closet 2 is in the process of being converted to secured bike and gun storage. Should be able to get most of it in there and leave one or two in the garage for easy access.

i have very secure doors to the garage and padlocks on the garage.
for keeping the bikes apart i use the display things the bike shops use.

for any bikes that are unused for a long long time, they live in boxes :)

i have a retention problem, as for parts now that i have a wee fella, they are in large plastic containers with difficult to open lids

hope that helps

Luckily I am the local hard nut so don't need to worry. The threat of a hood old knee capping keeps the bikes safe*

*this is complete codswallop.
